Rituals and Approaches to Writing the First Draft

What does it take to get started? Do you struggle writing that first draft? If so it may be beneficial to pay attention, to what you normally do that makes writing your first draft successful. This way when you have to get started on another piece of writing you know all the details that need to be attended to, like having that six-pack of Mountain Dew ready in the fridge. Take a look at when you write? What time of day makes it easiest for you to write? I find that writing in the evening is much more successful than getting up early in the morning to write something. Think in terms of time of week as well as time of day. Maybe certain kinds of writing are done with certain times. Another big thing you want to look at is where you write most comfortably. Is it snuggled up in you couch with a pen and pad of paper, or is it sitting at your desk typing on the computer. What are the physical attributes of these places? What makes them special? The important thing to remember is that if you do better writing in that corner of your room under the plant then each time you have to write something you want to return to that place. All of these conditions of your writing need to be taken into consideration. Think about what your favorite writing tools are. For me I would much rather type on a computer than write with a pen.
